Environmentalist – Vector Control (Health)
<p>The Environmentalist – Vector Control (Health) position at Shelby County Government in Memphis, TN involves inspecting for environmental health code violations, applying EPA-approved pesticides, and educating the public on sanitation issues. The role requires physical activity, a valid driver's license, and availability for shifts and on-call work.<br>Position Summary<br><br>This position conducts inspections and surveys to identify county environmental health code violations.<br><br>Pay Grade: 47<br><br>Salary Commensurate with Experience and Education<br><br>Minimum Qualifications<br><br>1. Two (2) year of experience in community sanitation or environmental health field; AND<br><br>2. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in physical, biological, sanitary science or a closely related field; OR<br><br>3. An equivalent combination of related education and/or experience.<br><br>4. Category 8 Pest Control Applicator – Public Health Category Certification can be substituted for one (1) year experience.<br><br>5. PROOF OF EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED.<br><br>Duties and Responsibilities<br><br>1. Investigates and diagnoses complaints regarding environmental conditions.<br><br>2. Applies EPA-approved pesticides following all state and federal regulations.<br><br>3. Enforces county ordinances regarding public health and safety.<br><br>4. Educates and empowers county residents regarding rodent infestations, mosquitoes, county ordinances, and unsanitary conditions.<br><br>5. Links individuals and neighborhood groups in partnerships to resolve issues.<br><br>6. Conducts research on property ownership to identify, notify, and take legal action against code violators.<br><br>7. Evaluates rodent infestations, mosquito problems, and sanitation problems.<br><br>8. Facilitates research in environmental health surveillance by collecting tick samples and preparing microscope samples for disease testing.<br><br>9. Develops court cases on violations of county ordinances.<br><br>10. Performs other related duties as required or directed.<br><br>KSAs<br><br>1. Knowledge of county ordinances.<br><br>2. Knowledge of state and federal restricted rodenticide laws and regulations.<br><br>3. Ability to compile, maintain, and interpret inspection and investigative records.<br><br>4. Ability to maintain cooperative relationships with the public and other agencies.<br><br>Physical Requirements<br><br>1. Must be able to perform physical activities to investigate complaints in all types of weather.<br><br>2. Must successfully pass a physical assessment.<br><br>Special Requirements<br><br>1. Must possess a valid Tennessee driver's license or secure one by date of employment.<br><br>2. Must have access to an operable automobile and meet County requirements of automobile insurance upon the date of employment.<br><br>3. Must be available to work shifts, weekends, and be on call.<br><br>4. Must be certified as a Category 8 Pest Control Applicator (Public Health Category) or obtain within six (6) months of employment date.<br><br>5. Must complete required mosquito and tick specification training and proficiently identify mosquitos and ticks using standard laboratory microscope.<br><br>6.
